Telecoms told: Boost network capacity for Undas traffic surge

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has directed major telecommunications companies to brace for a surge in mobile network traffic during the upcoming Undas holiday period to prevent service disruptions in high-density areas.
The regulatory agency announced Tuesday that it will work closely with telecommunications providers to resolve network issues and ensure uninterrupted communication services from 31 October to 2 November when millions of Filipinos travel to cemeteries and regional provinces for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
NTC commissioner Ella Blanca B. Lopez stressed that reliable communication channels among public safety agencies and the general public are critical during peak holiday travel.
In an official memorandum, the NTC instructed all regional directors to coordinate directly with local government units, law enforcement, disaster risk reduction offices, and emergency response units.
Regional offices were also tasked with monitoring Civic Action Groups and Amateur Radio Groups operating public assistance posts, radio base stations, and assigned patrol routes across the country.
“The NTC will likewise closely coordinate with telecommunications service providers, as may be necessary, to resolve reported service concerns and help maintain reliable telecommunications services, particularly in areas expected to experience increased public activity and mobile network traffic,” the commission said.
The regulator advised travelers to keep mobile devices fully charged, save local emergency hotlines, monitor official safety advisories, and utilize mobile communication channels responsibly when requesting emergency assistance.
