  • President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to adopt advanced construction technology to accelerate the rehabilitation of EDSA, Public Works officials announced.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon disclosed that the project, which began in Pasay City, has now entered Phase 2, stretching from Orense Street in Makati City to Monumento in Caloocan City.

The technological upgrade is intended to improve travel conditions for motorists, commuters, and pedestrians while minimizing road disruptions.

According to Dizon, the agency is utilizing computer-guided and laser-assisted paving machinery to ensure precise leveling and structural strength in the concrete base prior to asphalt application, replacing traditional manual paving methods.

“We are using speed-enhancing technologies to ensure the work is done properly. Asphalt paving is now computer-guided to ensure it is level. It uses lasers,” Dizon said.

“The President’s primary directive is for us to fulfill our promise to work quickly while keeping delays to a minimum,” he added.

Standard modern road construction technologies used internationally include digital twin technology, which relies on a virtual replica of the roadway; Building Information Modeling, which creates 3D digital models to simulate construction, scheduling, and traffic impacts; AI-based pavement systems utilizing drones and sensors to monitor conditions; and Finite Element Analysis, an engineering simulation used to determine optimal materials based on vehicle weight and temperature variables.

Phase 1 of the EDSA rehabilitation was completed on schedule in July 2026. EDSA serves as the primary arterial thoroughfare in the National Capital Region, spanning six cities: Pasay, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Quezon City, and Caloocan.
