The Philippines crushed host Peru, 8-0, to cap off its campaign in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in Lima on Saturday.
It took the Blu Girls only five innings to dispatch the Peruvians as they finished with a 2-3 win-loss record.
The Philippines fell short of advancing to the medal rounds as Great Britain and Venezuela held the advantage in the tiebreak.
Charlotte Sales, Reyae Villamin, Nicole Hammoude and Sydney Vitangcol put the Philippines on the board with four runs in the second inning.
Vitangcol, Skylynne Ellazar, Angelu Gabriel and Roma Jane Cruz scored four more runs in the fourth inning to double the Blu Girls’ lead.
The Philippines was coming off a stunning 5-4 upset victory over world No. 3 Puerto Rico on Friday to keep its playoff bid alive but suffered a heartbreaking 5-0 loss to Great Britain later that day.
Nevertheless, Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier lauded the Blu Girls for their upset victory over Puerto Rico.
“I’m incredibly proud of the Blu Girls for their remarkable win over World No. 3 Puerto Rico! They showed tremendous heart and composure under pressure, delivering an unforgettable performance that made the entire country proud,” Lhuillier said.
“This is Philippine softball at its best. Congratulations, Blu Girls!”
