Despite pulling off a shock victory over world No. 3 Puerto Rico, the Philippines failed to keep its medal hopes alive, bowing out of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup on Friday in Lima, Peru.
Even if the Blu Girls finished the tournament with a 2-3 win-loss record, it will not be enough to secure a playoff berth as Great Britain and Venezuela held the tiebreak advantage for the remaining Top 4 spots.
The Philippines opened its day with a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory over Peru.
Down to its last out in the seventh inning, the Blu Girls staged a dramatic rally behind crucial runs from Reyae Villamin, Charlotte Sales, Skylynne Ellazar and Alyssa Marie Daniell to steal the win.
The victory also snapped the team’s two-game skid following a 5-8 loss to Venezuela and a 0-4 defeat to defending champion Japan.
However, the Blu Girls could not sustain their momentum, absorbing a 0-5 setback against Great Britain that officially ended their medal hopes.
The British broke the game open in the fourth inning as Laura Hirai, Mia Krueger, Kaitlyn Parisi, Tia Warsop and Jahni Kerr all crossed the plate, while the Philippine offense failed to mount a response.
The Blu Girls will try to end their campaign on a high note as they take on host Peru on Saturday at 9 a.m. (Manila time).
