In March, Toyo Eatery celebrated its 10th anniversary, quite a feat for restaurants these days, with Talyer Talks, a series of talks exploring the evolving identity of Filipino food. And for one day only, Chef Jordy brought back their original 2016 tasting menu, at the 2016 price of PhP1,000+.
But it looks like it is not all wine and roses over at the famed restaurant, as allegations of unfair labor practices have come to light. In a report posted by Bilyonaryo News Channel on their Facebook page, past chefs and employees have claimed that they are made to work long hours with no overtime pay, and some without a valid contract. A source they interviewed said they would come in at 11AM and leave at 3:00AM five days a week. The same news story also cited complaints about a lack of transparency in terms of salaries, benefits, and other incentives. It also says that The Department of Labor and Employment is investigating the complaints, and have received statements from employees conflicting with the aforementioned claims. Lawyers from Toyo Eatery have disputed the allegations, and are said to have addressed the concerns raised by DOLE, including employment contracts. The final evaluation from the goverment agency is still pending.
