The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) remained on full alert Thursday as members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) transferred their protest from the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City to Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila, with authorities expecting thousands more participants.
NCRPO chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin said the full alert status would remain in effect to ensure public safety and maintain peace and order during the continuation of the rally, which organizers moved after their one-day permit to assemble along White Plains Avenue in Quezon City expired Wednesday night.
Aberin said police have requested augmentation forces from neighboring regional police offices and national support units to reinforce security operations in Manila, where the gathering is expected to draw a large crowd.
The police official said authorities were coordinating with the Manila Police District, the local government, and other concerned agencies to secure the rally venue while minimizing disruptions to motorists and commuters.
He added that traffic management and crowd control measures had been put in place.
Police earlier said they would not disperse the rally even after the Quezon City permit expired, noting that organizers had generally complied with authorities and that maintaining public safety remained the priority.
Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to expect heavy traffic in areas surrounding the rally venue and to take alternate routes where possible.
