While University of the Philippines (UP) ramps up preparations to reclaim the men’s basketball crown in Season 89 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Fighting Maroons are also looking into the future.
UP has gotten the commitment of Filipino-Canadian guard Irish Coquia as part of the Fighting Maroons’ basketball continuity program.
A former US National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I campaigner, Coquia will boost UP’s backcourt when he officially suits up for the team after serving a one-year residency in Season 90.
“I chose UP because I believe this program can bring out the best in me. UP gave me a vision for my future that felt right not just in basketball, but in who I can become,” the 6-foot-1 playmaker said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent UP, grow under this program, and keep working towards my goals.”
Coquia last suited up for the University of New Orleans following an impressive stint for Simon Fraser University in the US NCAA Division 2.
He was once one of British Columbia’s top high school players, averaging 35 points while leading his team to a provincial championship and earning Most Valuable Player honors.
The 20-year-old Coquia, after completing his residency, is eligible for two seasons of action for the Fighting Maroons.
His arrival ensures UP will continue to have a reliable piece in the guard spot as veterans Rey Remogat and Rain Maga will be exhausting their playing eligibilities by the end of Season 89.
After developing within the program for the next year, he will join forces with Fil-Am Joaquin Tovera in a dynamic backcourt tandem.
“Together with our other recruits, Irish will be a big help for us, especially to ensure continuity after the playing years of Rey and Rain,” UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde said.
