Authorities in Los Angeles have determined that former child actress Daveigh Chase died from complications related to AIDS, according to findings released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

The report classified her passing as a natural death and identified chronic polysubstance use as another significant medical condition.

Chase, 35, died in a Los Angeles hospital on 16 June. She rose to international recognition after portraying the nightmare-inducing Samara Morgan in the 2002 horror hit “The Ring” while also lending her voice to Lilo in Disney's “Lilo & Stitch.”

Her father, John David Schwallier, told The New York Times that Chase had been experiencing homelessness before her death and had been staying in Los Angeles with her boyfriend.

Prior to the release of the medical examiner's findings, her longtime manager, John Ryan Jr., said the actress had been hospitalized with meningitis before developing sepsis.

Long before becoming one of horror's most recognizable faces, Chase entered Hollywood as a child, beginning her acting career at just seven years old with a guest appearance on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” She later expanded her résumé with roles in “Donnie Darko” and “S. Darko.”

Her chilling portrayal of Samara, whose eerie emergence from a television became one of the defining images of modern horror, earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2003.

In the very same year, audiences discovered a gentler side of her talent through Disney's “Lilo & Stitch,” where she voiced the spirited Hawaiian girl Lilo. The performance won her an Annie Award and led to several returns to the role in the franchise's succeeding projects.

Chase eventually left the entertainment industry in 2015.

In the years that followed, she faced a series of legal issues, including arrests involving drug possession and operating a stolen vehicle, bringing a difficult final chapter to the life of an actress remembered for two of the most iconic roles of the early 2000s.
