Two motorcycle riders were arrested early Sunday morning following a predawn police chase after they allegedly attempted to evade a routine checkpoint while armed with a loaded handgun and a live hand grenade.
The suspects, identified by police as alias “Daniel” and alais “George,” both residents of Pasay, face multiple criminal complaints.
These include violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, unlawful possession of explosives, and resistance and disobedience to persons in authority.
The pursuit began around 3:35 a.m. during an “Oplan Sita” checkpoint at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and San Juan Street in Barangay 7.
According to Pasay police, officers flagged down an unplated black Yamaha NMAX motorcycle. Both riders were wearing helmets and face-concealing balaclavas.
Instead of stopping for inspection, the driver accelerated toward Buendia Avenue, prompting a police pursuit.
The chase ended on San Juan Street after officers cornered and blocked the vehicle.
When officers approached, the driver allegedly attempted to draw a firearm tucked into his waistband, triggering a brief struggle before officers subdued and disarmed him.
Police recovered a .38-caliber revolver loaded with six live rounds from the driver.
The passenger was also restrained after he allegedly reached for an object inside his sling bag. Officers searched the bag and recovered a live hand grenade.
The confiscated revolver has been sent to the Southern Police District Forensic Unit for ballistic examination.
Meantime, the hand grenade was transferred to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit for technical examination and safekeeping.
Police are investigating whether the suspects are linked to other criminal activities in the area.
