The Philippine National Police (PNP) will strengthen its child protection and cyber safety programs nationwide in support of the Department of Education's (DepEd) efforts to improve student safety and welfare.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Monday the police organization fully supports DepEd's proposal to hire more guidance counselors and expand coordination with law enforcement to better protect learners.
The initiative is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, local governments, schools, and communities.
"Guidance counselors play a vital role in early intervention and student welfare while the police can help ensure a safe and secure environment for learning. We are committed to working closely with schools, local governments, and communities to protect our students and prevent threats before they escalate," Nartatez said.
DepEd earlier announced plans to increase the number of guidance counselors and deepen its partnership with the PNP to enhance campus security, mental health services, and student protection.
To support the initiative, Nartatez directed all Women and Children Protection Desks to intensify information campaigns against bullying, child abuse, exploitation, violence against children, and online threats in coordination with schools and local stakeholders.
He also instructed the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group to expand cyber safety lectures for students, teachers, and school personnel to help them identify online threats and prevent cyber-enabled crimes.
"Law enforcement has an important role in maintaining a safe learning environment, but it is not a role we perform alone. Our focus is on prevention, protection, and partnership with educators, parents, and community leaders," Nartatez said.
He added that increased police visibility around schools, prompt response to incidents, and strengthened child protection programs will help ensure a safe and orderly environment for learners.
