A bus driver who fainted while fixing a flat tire at around 9:15 a.m. on 1 April, along the National Highway in Barangay Sumilihon, Butuan City, was spotted by patrolling personnel of the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), who immediately responded and rushed him for medical treatment.
Personnel of the Regional Headquarters Special Operations Team (RHQ-SOT), who were conducting police visibility operations in line with SUMVAC 2026 deployment, promptly responded after observing the driver lose consciousness while performing roadside repairs.
The responding HPG personnel provided immediate assistance and transported the driver to Butuan Medical Center for urgent medical attention. The driver is currently undergoing treatment and is being monitored by hospital personnel.
Rommel Batangan, acting director of the HPG, emphasized the importance of police presence and responsiveness, saying their personnel are always prepared to respond not only to law enforcement duties but also to emergencies that require immediate action, noting that public safety includes extending timely assistance to those in need on the roads.
The PNP-HPG advised motorists to ensure vehicle roadworthiness before travel and to exercise caution during roadside repairs, especially along busy highways.
Batangan added that the Highway Patrol Group remains steadfast in its mission as the nation’s “Guardians of the Highway,” committed to public safety, the enforcement of the rule of law, and the provision of immediate assistance through disciplined and service-oriented police operations.
