VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental — A 21-year-old student and his 18-year-old girlfriend were killed Friday after the motorcycle they were riding rear-ended a gasoline tanker, throwing them into the opposite lane where a 10-wheeler truck ran over their bodies.
Police Lt. Ronie Donasco, deputy police chief of the Villanueva Municipal Police Station, said the victims, identified only by the alias “Nelson” and his girlfriend, figured in the accident on the outskirts of the town.
Investigation showed the couple, who were riding in tandem, were trailing the gasoline tanker, which made a U-turn to enter a garage, when their motorcycle slammed into the rear of the truck.
The impact threw the victims onto the opposite lane, where a 10-wheeler truck loaded with soft drinks ran over them.
Police said the victims were not wearing helmets and sustained severe head and body injuries. They were declared dead on the spot.
The two truck drivers are now under police custody pending the filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide.
