Sen. Francis Escudero urged the Senate Committee on Energy to take up Senate Bill 498, which seeks to provide broader protections and benefits for workers in the power sector.
Escudero made the call following Meralco’s announcement of a 0.2226-peso per kilowatt-hour increase in February electricity rates, which is expected to raise household bills by about 45 pesos for an average consumer.
While acknowledging the impact on consumers, Escudero emphasized the importance of protecting workers who keep the power grid running.
“Consumers are burdened by rising rates, but the linemen and frontliners who keep the grid running face risks and inadequate safeguards. SB 498 seeks to address this gap,” Escudero said.

The bill is pending committee hearings chaired by Sen. Pia Cayetano.
