Mount Kanlaon was once again observed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to have undergone a moderate explosion this Thursday evening.
This explosion came exactly a week after a similar seismic activity was recorded at the Negros Oriental based volcano last February 19.
Authorities noted that the eruption lasted for two minutes and generated an ash emission that hovered 2,500 meters above the volcano’s crater prior to drifting towards the southwestern side of the volcano.
PHIVOLCS also reported spotting incandescent ballistics raining down the perimeter of the volcano accompanied by a pyroclastic density current that went the eastern and southeastern part of the summit.
The agency noted on its social media post at 8:30 p.m. that Kanlaon has persisted its ash emissions nearly over an hour after its initial eruption at around 7:04 p.m.
PHIVOLCS has not mentioned whether the volcano will be lifted to an Alert Level 3 status as it continues to conduct its 24 hour observation of the volcano following the incident.
In its latest observation, Kanlaon was placed in Alert Level 2 as there were three volcanic earthquakes experienced at the volcano with a total of 373 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux emitted last 25 February.
