Two individuals were killed while three others were injured after unidentified gunmen ambushed them on the night of 24 February 2026 along Calaba Bridge in Barangay Calaba, Bangued, Abra.
Police identified the fatalities as Ezequiel Castañeda Parado, 35, barangay chairman of Collago, Lagayan, and Arlene Dorias, a resident of the same barangay.
The injured victims were identified as Ailyn S. Parado, a member of the Sangguniang Bayan of Lagayan; Edron Salingbay; and Jaypee Soliba Gacayan, 38, a farmer and native of Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte. All three were also residents of Barangay Collago.
The Bangued Municipal Police Station said it received the report through the Provincial Tactical Operations Center. Responding officers found that four of the victims had already been taken to the Abra Provincial Hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the victims were rushed to the hospital by personnel from the Dolores Municipal Police Station who were passing through the area while en route to a requiem mass at the Abra Provincial Police Office chapel. Gacayan remained at the scene to provide a statement to investigators.
Initial investigation showed that Ezequiel and Ailyn Parado were traveling in a dark blue Toyota Fortuner, while their companions followed in a green Nissan Frontier. As both vehicles were crossing the bridge toward Barangay Mudeng in La Paz, Abra, suspects aboard a white pickup truck opened fire.
The suspects fled immediately after the shooting.
The Bangued Municipal Police Station has requested assistance from the Abra Provincial Forensic Unit to process the crime scene and gather evidence.
