The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has maintained Alert Level 3 in Mayon Volcano in Albay amid consistent seismic activity at the volcano this Tuesday.

In PHIVOLCS’ 24-hour observation of the volcano, a lava effusion was once again detected at the crater with lava flowing 3.8 kilometers down the Basud gully, and 2.2 and 1.3 kilometers down the Bonga and Mi-isi gullies, respectively.

A total of four volcanic earthquakes were also recorded around its perimeter which resulted in 305 rockfalls and the emission of 20 pyroclastic density currents, locally referred to as “uson.”

Mayon was said to have emitted around 3891 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Monday, February 24. A common byproduct of active volcanoes that can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, or nose when coming into contact with people.

Entrance into Mayon’s six kilometer permanent danger zone and aircraft flying in close proximity with the volcano has remained prohibited under Alert Level 3.

Meanwhile, Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island, which had recently undergone a moderate explosion on February 19, has also retained Alert Level 2 after 21 volcanic earthquakes last Monday.

Taal Volcano in Batangas, on the other hand, was also kept under Alert Level 1 based on PHIVOLCS observations.
