Around 50 people are reportedly missing after a portion of a landfill collapsed in Sitio 1B Harangan, Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal on 20 February, according to residents and a progressive group.

Urban poor advocate group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) said the collapse occurred around 2 p.m., reportedly affecting nearly 100 residents.

Among those affected are waste pickers, or scavengers, inside the facility operated by the private contractor of the Rizal Provincial Sanitary Landfill, International Solid Waste Integrated Management Specialist Inc. (ISWIMS).

The group called for immediate rescue operations, an open investigation and accountability from the landfill operator and the local government for any alleged safety lapses.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Rizal also urged authorities to act swiftly on the incident.

In a statement, the group called on the local government to allow free entry of media and to conduct immediate rescue operations.

Residents expressed concern over the alleged threat of demolition in the community, home to nearly 1,000 families who rely on scavenging as their primary livelihood.

The group also raised the issue of an alleged land claim by New San Jose Builders Inc.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said it has coordinated with ISWIMS, the company managing the landfill.

According to ISWIMS, three individuals have been confirmed missing in the incident.

The local government reminded the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and fake news that could cause further pain and confusion to affected families.

Authorities continue search and investigation operations.
