The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed police forces to support search and rescue operations following a landfill landslide in Cebu City that left at least one person dead and several others trapped.

PNP Chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police units in Cebu City and nearby areas to provide manpower, security, and logistical support at the site of the landslide in the Binaliw landfill, which occurred on 8 January.

Police personnel were deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts, crowd control, and traffic management, while securing the affected area and establishing police assistance desks and perimeter control.

The PNP said it is coordinating with the local government unit, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and volunteer rescuers.

Initial investigations showed that the landslide damaged the landfill’s administrative office. Authorities reported that at least 20 people were trapped during the incident, while several others were rescued.

Nartatez said a parallel investigation has been ordered but emphasized that rescue operations remain the priority.

He said authorities would examine possible factors behind the incident, including compliance with safety and environmental regulations, once the situation stabilizes.

Nartatez also urged the public to follow advisories and avoid restricted areas as rescue and clearing operations continue.
