TABUAN LASA, Basilan — After weeks of uncertainty, Tabuan Lasa finally has its new vice mayor.
Haji Halil officially took his oath of office on Friday following a court decision that settled the disputed vice mayoral race. The ceremony was held at the Hall of Justice in Basilan and was administered by Judge Leo Jay Principe.
Halil’s assumption to office came after the court issued a writ of execution — effectively enforcing its final ruling and clearing the way for him to formally step into the post. The decision ended a prolonged election challenge that had stalled local governance and fueled debate in the community.
Supporters, local officials, and residents gathered for the occasion, which also featured a solemn duwaa prayer seeking guidance and blessings for the municipality’s new leadership.
In his brief remarks, Halil thanked those who stood by him and emphasized the need for unity and cooperation moving forward.
“Unity is our foundation; together, we shall build a brighter future,” he said, pledging transparent and accountable leadership focused on inclusive growth and stability.
Observers say the peaceful transition underscores the role of the courts in resolving electoral disputes and restoring public confidence in the democratic process — particularly in areas like Basilan, where stability and good governance remain top priorities.
