For generations, Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion has been known for staging live productions that bring the community together, with most roles proudly portrayed by its own students. This tradition has truly stood the test of time.
Recently multi-awarded director Benjie Diola, himself a product of the school, returned to once again helm the iconic production, The King and I.
Watching the legendary Broadway musical created by duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, was a genuinely rewarding experience, one that stayed with the audience long after the final curtain call.
Diola’s masterful direction was evident in every detail, from the seamless flow of scenes to the powerful emotional arc of the characters. He guided the cast to deliver performances that were disciplined and heartfelt.
Under his direction, the classic musical was reimagined with fresh energy while staying true to the heart of the beloved production.
The cast, composed of students, alumni and professional actors delivered powerful vocals and expressive acting that brought the story to life. There was a sense of discipline but not rigid. It created confidence particularly among the younger performers, who carried themselves with assurance and poise. This balance between structure and emotional freedom elevate the overall quality of the production.
The staging at Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion provided an intimate yet dynamic setting. Thoughtful lighting and creative set design transformed the space into the royal court of Siam while vibrant costumes added authenticity and visual richness.
As the show ended, the standing ovation was well deserved. The King and I was not just entertaining, it was thoughtful, heartfelt and clearly shaped by a director who respects both the material and the people bringing it to life.
