Senator Robin Padilla has consistently taken positions on politically sensitive and divisive issues, even when such stances may run counter to his own political interests, according to his chief of staff.
In a statement on 16 February, Atty. Rudolf Philip Jurado said Padilla is often misunderstood, but stressed that the senator is unafraid to raise issues others may see as highly controversial.
“As someone who has worked closely with him for years, I can say that the senator does not hesitate to raise and advocate for issues that others may consider taboo, unpopular, or politically risky,” he said.
“He does so even when these positions may run counter to his own political interests, his allies, or prevailing public sentiment,” he added.
Jurado cited Padilla’s position on political dynasties as an example, noting that the senator has pushed for one of the strictest versions of the proposed legislation, extending prohibitions up to the fourth degree of consanguinity.
“This is despite the fact that he himself belongs to a political family and the measure may affect his political allies, including those in Mindanao and in the BARMM,” Jurado said.
He pointed out that Padilla has also openly supported the shift to a parliamentary form of government or federalism, even when this may not align with certain political interests.
