BAGUIO CITY — Baguio City has been selected as a beneficiary of the Green and Resilient Cities Project, a global initiative focused on biodiversity conservation and low-carbon urban development.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong confirmed the selection following an announcement from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB).
The Global Environment Facility Council approved the project under its 8th Replenishment Cycle. The initiative has a total budget of approximately $13 million. It will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the BMB to promote nature-based solutions across several Philippine cities.
City officials noted that Baguio’s inclusion followed a series of stakeholder consultations and meetings during the development phase. These sessions were intended to align the project design with specific local priorities and environmental requirements.
According to Magalong, the project will support city-led efforts to address biodiversity issues and environmental degradation. He noted that the primary objective is to improve the city's carrying capacity and enhance long-term climate resiliency.
The City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO), along with the City Planning, Development and Sustainability Office and the City Administrator’s Office, will coordinate with international partners for implementation. The Global Environment Facility provides the necessary funding through grants aimed at addressing land degradation, climate change, and other environmental concerns.
