PLDT erected an almost impenetrable barrier in front of the net, blotting the sunshine out of Capital1’s usually efficient attackers in their 2026 Premier Volleyball Leage (PBL) All-Filipino Conference duel Thursday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
The High Speed Hitters got the job done by flexing a defensive masterclass in schooling the Solar Spikers, 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, for back-to-back wins.
Roofing Capital1 with solid blocking to collect 15 kill blocks, PLDT spoiled Solar Spikers rookie Bella Belen’s league career-high 28 points and stayed unbeaten after two starts.
A strong start by the High Speed Hitters in the fourth set extinguished the fight out of Capital1 after it stole the tight third frame for a tie with idle Nxled at second spot behind solo leader Cignal (3-0).
Savi Davison got her usual numbers, finishing with 20 points, 17 coming from kills, while adding 11 excellent receptions to lead PLDT, which opened its campaign with a sweep of powerhouse Creamline last week.
Kim Kianna Dy also stepped up big time with 20 points anchored on 16 attacks and four kill blocks while Majoy Baron scored five of her 11 markers from denials at the net for the High Speed Hitters. Kim Fajardo tallied 25 excellent sets.
“I guess we used our first game as momentum coming into this game. We treat every game equally so we prepared well for Capital1. Kudos also to Capital1. They really gave a good game. It’s really exhausting playing against them,” said Dy, who contributed on floor defense with 11 digs.
PLDT extended a 6-3 lead to start the fourth frame with a 7-2 run for a comfortable cushion it sustained the rest of the way.
PLDT raced to a 5-0 start in the second set and made a living sending Capital1’s attacks back to its senders. A mini run got the Solar Spikers to within three, only for the High Speed Hitters to unleash a decisive 8-1 run to build a 16-6 advantage before cruising to a 2-0 match lead.
PLDT trimmed a four-point deficit in the closing stretch of the third frame, 22-21, only for Angge Alcantara to commit a service error before Belen scored back-to-back hits as Capital1 avoided a shutout.
