A moment of deep spiritual symbolism unfolded at the Saint Bernadette Chapel of the National Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes as the image of Saint Francis of Assisi joined the Altar Mayor of Our Lady of Lourdes for the Grand Marian Exhibit, Maria, Mater Ecclesia (Mary, Mother of the Church).
The rare display brings together two towering figures of the Catholic faith: Saint Francis, who once heard the call to “rebuild My Church,” and the Blessed Virgin Mary, who continues to nurture and strengthen the Church through her maternal presence. Their meeting at the altar reflects a shared mission of humility, obedience, and spiritual renewal.
For devotees and pilgrims, the exhibit serves as a visual reminder that rebuilding the Church begins with surrender and service. As Saint Francis responded to God’s call with radical simplicity, Mary stands as the first and constant companion in forming the Body of Christ.
The sacred encounter also forms part of the global commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of Saint Francis, marking his passage to eternal life from 1226 to 2026. The milestone celebration is being observed during the Franciscan Jubilee Year from 2026 to 2027, proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV.
The Grand Marian Exhibit runs until 11 February at the Saint Bernadette Chapel, inviting the faithful to reflect, pray, and rediscover the enduring call to renew both the Church and oneself.
