TACLOBAN CTY — The provincial government of Northern Samar launched an employment program Thursday aimed at providing jobs to senior citizens, people with disabilities and other vulnerable residents.
The initiative, dubbed “EmpowerWork,” seeks to promote economic independence and dignity by integrating these sectors into government and community service.
“This promotes productivity, inclusivity, and active economic participation for our senior citizens and PWDs,” Governor Harris Ongchuan said during the launch at the Provincial Capitol.
As part of the initial phase, Ongchuan signed employment contracts with a group of residents from the towns of Catarman, Bobon and San Jose. Under the agreement, participants will receive P4,000 per month for a 20-hour weekly flexible work schedule over a three-month period.
Upon completion of the program, beneficiaries will also receive a wellness kit containing rice, groceries, multivitamins and essential medicines.
Rose Anne Suan, head of the Northern Samar Public Employment Service Office, said the program will provide inclusive employment to 40 people with disabilities and 20 senior citizens during its first year.
Ongchuan expressed hope that the provincial initiative would serve as a model for broader national support. “The provincial government is here, always willing to help our vulnerable sector,” he said.
