The FEU Center for the Arts will stage Walang Sugat in a free-admission performance on 4 February as part of Far Eastern University’s 98th founding anniversary activities. The production will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the FEU Auditorium.
Walang Sugat is a sarswela written by Severino Reyes, with music by Fulgencio Tolentino. The production includes arrangements and additional music by Josefino Toledo, an FEU Outstanding Alumnus.
The production is directed by Alegria O. Ferrer of the University of the Philippines College of Music. Musical direction is led by Roijin Suarez, artistic director of the FEU Chorale.
The cast is composed of current students and alumni from the FEU Chorale, FEU Theater Guild, and FEU Guides. The production also includes performances by the FEU Bamboo Band, FEU Dance Company, FEU Theater Guild, FEU Drum and Bugle Corps, and FEU Drummers.
The staging coincides with the anniversary of the event on 4 February 1898 that marked the beginning of the Filipino-American War.
Walang Sugat is set during the Philippine Revolution and follows the story of Tenyong and Julia. Tenyong joins the armed struggle, while Julia faces opposition from her family and the church due to her relationship with him. The narrative presents the impact of war, separation, and political conflict on personal relationships.
