The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed Wednesday that businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang has no recent travel records, amid reports that the gambling tycoon may have fled to Cambodia following the issuance of arrest warrants in connection with the missing sabungeros case.
“When we checked BI records, there’s no recent departure for Mr. Atong Ang,” BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said in a television interview.
She added that if authorities encounter anyone crossing illegally in certain areas, those names are reported to the BI to verify their travel records.
“So far, we haven’t received any coordination from the Philippine Coast Guard, and local law enforcement is monitoring these areas. There’s been no interception yet,” Sandoval said.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier said authorities are confident Ang remains in the Philippines, though they acknowledged reports suggesting he might be in Cambodia are unconfirmed.
The government has offered a P10-million reward for information leading to Ang’s arrest. He is now considered a “most wanted” fugitive.
Ang, along with several co-accused, faces charges for multiple counts of kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention in connection with the missing sabungeros case. He has denied the allegations.
His lawyer described the arrest warrant as “premature” and “legally questionable,” arguing it did not meet constitutional standards.
