Operatives from the Caloocan City Police arrested two Iranian nationals Saturday evening following a “salisi” style theft targeting a roadside fish and vegetable vendor.
The suspects, identified as a 50-year-old man and a 25-year-old driver, were intercepted in the Baesa area shortly after the incident, according to police reports.
The 35-year-old vendor told investigators he was tending to his stall along Reparo Road in Barangay 161 at approximately 5:30 p.m. when he was approached by a man speaking English.
The suspect reportedly asked to see Philippine currency, and after the vendor complied, the man allegedly grabbed the vendor’s bag and rifled through the cash.
Upon inspecting his belongings, the vendor discovered P7,000 was missing. He attempted to chase the suspect and sought help from a barangay watchman, but the man fled in a waiting vehicle.
Officers from the Sta. Quiteria Police Sub-Station launched a follow-up operation and stopped the getaway vehicle. The vendor positively identified both the primary suspect and the driver.
Authorities recovered various local and foreign currencies from the suspects, along with the vehicle used in the escape.
Both men were informed of their constitutional rights and underwent medical examinations before being turned over to the Investigation and Detective Management Section for inquest proceedings.
Acting PNP Chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the swift arrest highlights the department’s commitment to protecting small business owners from street-level crime.
“This incident shows that when the public and the police work together, criminals have little room to escape,” Nartatez said. “We will continue to ensure that our streets remain safe for people who are just trying to earn an honest living.”
The suspects remain in custody as theft charges are being prepared.
