Authorities struck a blow against cigarette smuggling in northern Cebu after the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized around P2 million worth of illegal cigarettes in Barangay Kangwayan, Madridejos town, Bantayan Island on Saturday.
CIDG-Cebu operatives confiscated 40 master cases of United and Union cigarette brands during the operation.
A suspect identified only as “John,” 19, single and a resident of Barangay Tabagak, Madridejos, was arrested after he was allegedly caught in the act of selling and trading the cigarettes. Authorities said the products lacked the required graphic health warnings, a violation of Republic Act 10643 or the Graphic Health Warning Law.
In a report submitted to Police Major General Robert AA Morico II, CIDG-Cebu said the law aims to protect public health, promote health awareness, and shield consumers from unfair trade practices and substandard tobacco products. Officials emphasized that studies show plain text warnings are often ignored, while graphic health warnings are more effective in communicating the dangers of smoking.
The operation forms part of CIDG’s intensified campaign against illicit tobacco products, in line with the directive of PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. to crack down on cigarette smuggling nationwide.
CIDG also commended Police Colonel Christopher M. Bermudez, regional chief of CIDG Regional Field Unit 7, and the CIDG Cebu Provincial Field Unit led by Lt. Col. Bryan “O’Neil” C. Salvacion for the successful operation and arrest of the suspect.
CIDG assured the public that it remains firm in enforcing the law and unyielding toward violators. The group also urged residents to report smuggled and illegal tobacco products in their communities — “CIDG will do the rest.”
