Makati City has earned A-List recognition from CDP, a global environmental organization, for the third consecutive year, Mayor Nancy Binay announced on Friday, citing the city’s continued commitment to environmental transparency and climate action.

The recognition places Makati among 120 cities worldwide that demonstrated leadership in environmental governance and climate resilience for 2025.

“This recognition reflects our continuing commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience. In Makati, we understand that transparency is the foundation of effective climate action. By sharing our environmental data and progress with the global community, we hold ourselves accountable and contribute to the collective effort to address climate change,” Binay said.

CDP operates the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system. In 2025, more than 1,000 cities, states and regions reported environmental data through the CDP platform. Cities that achieved an A score met leadership criteria that include comprehensive disclosure, established environmental governance and measurable progress toward ecological resilience.

To qualify for an A score, cities are required to publicly disclose environmental data through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform, maintain a citywide greenhouse gas emissions inventory, publish a climate action plan, complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and set clear climate adaptation goals.

Binay said the recognition underscores the urgency of sustained climate action. “The climate crisis demands action, not just words. We have taken concrete steps to reduce our emissions, strengthen our resilience, and protect our communities. This A-List recognition validates our approach, but more importantly, it reinforces our responsibility to do more,” she said.

Makati’s climate initiatives include emissions monitoring, climate risk assessments and action plans covering green infrastructure, sustainable transport, waste management and disaster preparedness.

“As one of the Philippines’ most dynamic cities, Makati has a unique responsibility to lead by example,” Binay added. “We are not only the financial and commercial heart of the nation, but also a community committed to building a sustainable future. Our participation in CDP reinforces our position as a city that takes climate action seriously and delivers results that benefit our residents and the planet.”

The cities on the 2025 CDP A-List represent urban centers across all inhabited continents and are considered global benchmarks for environmental leadership.

“Climate change affects all of us, regardless of borders. By working together and sharing our progress, cities like Makati can inspire others to take action. We will continue to push forward, to innovate, and to ensure that our children inherit a city that is not just prosperous, but sustainable and resilient,” Binay said.
