After more than six years in development limbo, Lore Olympus is officially stepping into the spotlight.
Prime Video has given a series order to the adult animated adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s massively popular web comic, bringing together Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company for the long-awaited project. The series has been in development since 2019 and will be led by showrunner Julia Cooperman (The Winchesters, Pantheon).
For fans who have followed the project since its earliest announcement, the green light marks a major milestone. Lore Olympus has long been seen as a natural fit for animation thanks to its instantly recognizable art style and its bold reworking of Greek mythology through a modern lens. From flat, graphic, neon-bright, and emotionally expressive comic panels, Lore Olympus will come to life onscreen.
Originally launched on Tumblr before finding a global audience on Webtoon, Smythe’s comic reimagines the myth of Persephone and Hades as a contemporary romance set in a stylized, divine world. The series blends ancient gods with modern social dynamics, tackling power, consent, identity, and love while keeping its mythological roots intact. The approach has resonated widely, making Lore Olympus one of the most-read web comics in the world and earning it multiple Eisner, Harvey, and Ringo Awards.
The animated adaptation aims to carry that same energy forward. Creators involved have emphasized the story’s emotional core, playful tone, and relevance to modern audiences, positioning it as both a faithful adaptation for longtime readers and an entry point for newcomers unfamiliar with the comic.
The project also marks a first for The Jim Henson Company, which is producing its first-ever adult animated series. Executives from the company have pointed to Smythe’s world-building and visual imagination as key reasons the material stood out, describing the series as a fresh and timely take on classic mythology.
Lore Olympus will join Prime Video’s growing slate of adult animation, alongside titles such as Invincible, Hazbin Hotel, The Legend of Vox Machina, and #1 Happy Family USA. With its distinctive aesthetic, devoted global fandom, and modernized mythological storytelling, the series is shaping up to be one of the streamer’s most closely watched animation launches.
