Immigration authorities at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) intercepted four passengers last week, including two suspected couriers, in what officials described as a human trafficking attempt disguised as a group vacation to China.
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Wednesday that the interception occurred 15 January at Terminal 1.
Two women identified as potential victims were attempting to board a Philippine Airlines flight to China alongside a husband and wife who were acting as their companions.
During an interview with the bureau’s protection and border enforcement section, one of the victims initially claimed the group was traveling for a five-day “incentive tour” sponsored by a local employer.
However, officers noted inconsistencies in the group’s statements. One victim later admitted she intended to work illegally as a domestic helper in China for an unidentified employer who promised her a monthly salary of P40,000.
Authorities assessed the couple traveling with the women as “couriers” used to facilitate the illicit transit.
All four individuals were turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation and the filing of potential charges.
The BI has frequently warned Filipinos against seeking employment abroad using tourist visas, noting that such travelers often face exploitation and lack legal protection in foreign countries.
