Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi concluded a high-level diplomatic visit to the Philippines this week, reinforcing economic ties and signing a landmark defense cooperation agreement.
The visit culminated Thursday with the signing of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, known as ACSA. Motegi and Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro signed the pact, which establishes a formal framework for the reciprocal provision of supplies and services between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Officials said the agreement is designed to facilitate smoother logistics and promote closer security cooperation to contribute to regional stability.
On Wednesday, Motegi held a 70-minute meeting with several Philippine Cabinet members, including Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan. During the session, Motegi reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting the Philippines’ goal of achieving upper middle-income status.
The ministers discussed ways to improve the transparency and predictability of the local investment environment. Motegi identified the Philippines as a critical partner for trade and investment, noting high expectations for the country’s market potential.
