London is claiming the title of “world’s largest urban forest” based on the United Kingdom’s Forestry Commission’s tree count — 8 million — that cover 21 percent of the capital city.
Nearly matching the metropolis population, the trees are spread across parks, streets, gardens and woodlands. They improve the city’s air quality, reduces carbon emissions, helps lower urban heat, manages rainwater runoff, and supports wildlife and urban biodiversity.
The city’s green canopy not only shapes its skyline but also strengthens long-term sustainability and livability, according to a Facebook post from Mechanical Mind.
The technical definition or urban forest, coming from forestry and environmental authorities, is not exclusive to London though. Other major cities around the world that are recognized for having significant urban forests or extensive tree canopy cover are Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, Atlanta, Washington DC, Goiania (Brazil), New York, Melbourne, Vancouver, Geneva and Frankfurt.
