Department of Health (DoH) Secretary Ted Herbosa said Wednesday that reports of a “super flu” circulating abroad are not a cause for alarm in the Philippines, though he urged international travelers to take precautions.

In a televised briefing, Herbosa advised Filipinos planning trips to the United States or Europe to receive the Northern Hemisphere flu vaccine, noting it differs from the Southern Hemisphere shot typically administered in the Philippines.

“Not alarming, but if you are traveling, get the northern hemisphere shot,” Herbosa said.

He explained that recent outbreaks in the US and United Kingdom are exacerbated by winter conditions. In the Philippines, flu season traditionally coincides with the rainy months rather than the turn of the year.

The DoH has recorded 17 cases of the so-called “super flu” in the Philippines since July and August of last year. Officials confirmed all patients have recovered.

Herbosa encouraged high-risk individuals — including the elderly, cancer patients and those with underlying medical conditions — to stay current with their vaccinations.

He also recommended standard public health measures, such as isolating when sick and covering the mouth when coughing, to prevent transmission.
