Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Falcon by President Halla Tómasdóttir at a ceremony at the presidential residence in Reykjavík.
The honour was conferred on 01 January 2026 as part of Iceland’s biannual tradition of bestowing its highest national distinction on citizens who have made significant contributions to the nation’s cultural, artistic, and international reputation.
The Order of the Falcon is Iceland’s sole order of chivalry and its most prestigious state honour, established by royal decree on 03 July 1921 during the reign of King Christian X of Denmark and Iceland.
It recognises individuals — Icelandic and international — whose achievements have brought honor or benefit to Iceland or to humanity at large. The president, who serves as the order’s Grand Master, presents awards twice a year: on New Year’s Day and on Iceland’s National Day (17 June).
Laufey’s recognition reflects her rapid rise as a global musical figure blending jazz, pop, classical, and bossa nova influences. Born in Reykjavík in 1999 to an Icelandic father and Chinese mother, Laufey began her music journey performing as a cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at age 15 before gaining broader attention through televised talent competitions and digital platforms.
Over the past few years, Laufey has garnered international acclaim — including Grammy recognition for her 2023 album Bewitched — and has helped raise Iceland’s profile in contemporary music.
Her songs, such as “From the Start,” “Goddess,” “Valentine,” and “Falling Behind,” have reached a wide audience, with millions of streams worldwide.
In accepting the Order of the Falcon, Laufey joins a distinguished list of honourees that includes Icelandic cultural icons, artists, scientists, and global figures whose work has enhanced Iceland’s cultural and social legacy.
