Judiciary has ‘renewed resolve’ this ’26

Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo marked the start of 2026 by reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to a multiyear reform plan aimed at making Philippine courts more efficient and accessible.

In a New Year message, Gesmundo said the judiciary is entering the year with “renewed energy” to strengthen the administration of justice. He emphasized that the focus remains on the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations (SPJI) 2022–2027.

“A new year represents new beginnings and fresh opportunities,” Gesmundo said.

The SPJI serves as a five-year blueprint for institutionalizing technology and reducing case backlogs.

Gesmundo said these reforms are specifically designed to bring justice closer to the public, particularly for vulnerable populations.

While the current plan is set to conclude in 2027, the chief justice clarified that the drive for modernization will continue beyond that date.

“The end of the SPJI will mark not a conclusion, but a transition,” Gesmundo said, adding that the court will adopt new, adaptive strategies to meet evolving public needs.
