ILOILO CITY — Fireworks-related injuries in Western Visayas reached seven cases between 21 and 29 December, prompting health officials to renew safety warnings ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Data from the Department of Health (DoH) Western Visayas Center for Health Development shows that children represent the majority of the victims. The total includes three children aged one to nine and one teenager.

Other victims were recorded in the 30s, 50s and 60-and-above age brackets.

The injuries were reported at three sentinel hospitals in the region. While all victims have been treated and discharged, health officials emphasized that such accidents are entirely preventable.

The department urged the public to avoid lighting firecrackers at home, suggesting instead that residents attend organized professional displays or use safer alternatives that produce sound or light without explosive risks.

Officials reminded families to bring any injury victims immediately to the nearest hospital for professional treatment.

In a related development, the Pampanga Police Provincial Office has established dozens of authorized firecracker zones and fireworks display areas to regulate holiday revelry across the province.

Police have designated 24 community firecracker zones across 18 municipalities, including multiple zones in Porac, Bacolor, San Fernando and Candaba. Other towns, such as Apalit, Lubao and Mexico, have one designated zone each.

In addition to the firecracker areas, authorities identified 16 specific zones for fireworks displays.

Police warned that using firecrackers or fireworks outside these authorized areas is strictly prohibited. Violators face penalties including fines of up to P20,000, imprisonment for six months to one year, and potential administrative sanctions.

“Your cooperation is vital in ensuring that our gatherings remain joyful and safe,” the provincial police office said in a statement. Residents can access a full list of locations via a QR code on the Pampanga police social media pages.
