Barry Manilow, one of pop music’s most enduring voices, is entering the new year with caution and optimism after revealing that doctors discovered a cancerous spot on his lung that will require surgery.
The 82-year-old singer-songwriter said the finding came unexpectedly after a prolonged bout with bronchitis. Although his symptoms had eased and he had already returned to performing in Las Vegas, his physician ordered additional tests as a precaution. Imaging results later revealed a small cancerous area on his left lung, detected early enough to significantly improve his prognosis.
Manilow said doctors are confident the cancer has not spread and that current assessments indicate he will not need chemotherapy or radiation. Instead, he is scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the affected area, followed by an estimated recovery period of about one month.
Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Manilow maintained a reassuring and lighthearted tone, expressing gratitude for early detection and the vigilance of his medical team. He also urged fans not to dismiss lingering symptoms and to seek medical attention even when health concerns appear minor.
Due to the upcoming surgery and recovery, Manilow’s arena concerts scheduled for January will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date. He emphasized, however, that the break from performing is temporary and that he looks forward to returning to the stage once he has fully recovered.
With a career marked by resilience and a deep connection with his audience, Manilow said he remains focused on healing and getting back to doing what he loves—sharing music with fans around the world.
