Holiday giving took on a deeper meaning this December at the Buddhist Tzu Chi Campus (BTCC) in Sta. Mesa, Manila as humanitarian organization Tzu Chi Philippines held its annual holiday bazaar and baking workshop for young children.

Instead of heading to crowded malls for Christmas presents, Sonny Chua, Arlene Sy and couple Christian and Marvie Duñgo went to the bazaar on 7 December, and bought unique home décor, dry goods and freshly prepared vegetarian dishes in a gesture of support for the future of healthcare.

Every purchase came with a meaningful purpose: all proceeds would help fund the construction of the Tzu Chi General Hospital, a modern medical center rising within BTCC. The hospital will bring the compassion and global expertise of the Tzu Chi International Medical Association and the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation Philippines, which runs the Tzu Chi Eye Center located within the campus.

For many, that mission was reason enough to support the event. Arlene, a regular at Tzu Chi activities, said, “This is part of our way of helping, our willingness to assist, in our own little way. It’s our good deed.” Sonny, who hails from Legazpi City, felt moved to give back after Tzu Chi volunteers helped his hometown recover from the devastating 2006 super typhoon “Reming.” He carefully chose products crafted by fellow volunteers, wanting gift recipients to know the heart and history behind each item.

The Duñgos echoed the same sentiment. Aware of Tzu Chi’s wide-ranging humanitarian efforts — from assisting typhoon survivors to providing scholarships — they knew that supporting the bazaar meant contributing to a hospital that will continue saving lives for generations.

“Please keep doing what you’re doing. We will be here to support you,” Christian said.

Cupcakes of kindness

Just a few days earlier, another heartwarming effort unfolded within the same campus — this time led by the youngest members of the Tzu Chi community. On 4 to 5 December, the Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool Philippines hosted a cupcake baking and sale at the BTCC Bakery.

With tiny aprons and eager hands, the preschoolers, joined by their parents in baking special snacks from scratch.

For the children, it was a joyful, hands-on learning experience. But behind every carefully mixed batter and every cupcake sold was a heartfelt lesson in kindness: that even at a young age, they could help heal others.

Pastry teacher Marian Carpo said the activity went beyond baking, serving as a lesson in compassion and community service.

“This year, we made cupcakes to help build the hospital. We want the children to understand that learning also means helping others and serving communities in need,” Carpo said.

Together, the Tzu Chi shoppers and chefs showed that compassion comes in many forms — whether through choosing gifts, buying a lovingly made cupcake, or teaching children the value of giving. And with each small act, they are collectively helping build something that will one day offer hope, dignity and quality healthcare to countless families.

In a season filled with giving, their efforts remind us that the simplest contributions can help build something truly life-changing.
