Sabrina Carpenter may be riding high on a wave of Grammy nominations, but the road to her career-defining “Manchild” music video came with an unexpected prick — literally.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the 26-year-old pop star recounted the moment her ambitious three-day shoot turned painful. “I fell on a cactus,” Carpenter admitted, half-laughing at the memory before acknowledging the sting. “It’s so easy to laugh when people get hurt. And I did. But then I started crying.”

The accident happened during an outdoor sequence for “Manchild,” the lead single off her album Man’s Best Friend. With 37 outfit changes and a concept that demanded cinematic scale, the shoot pushed Carpenter and her team to their physical limits.

“I’ll be honest, that shoot was so ambitious,” she said.

“That was probably my biggest shoot I’ve ever done. I’m so grateful to be able to make that production of my dreams. But it was definitely… We endured a lot of pain to get the finished product.”

Even with a medic on standby, the aftermath wasn’t glamorous. “For the rest of the day I was picking things out of—” she trailed off, laughing as the audience filled in the blanks. Still, the final release proved worth every jab, scrape, and creative risk.

“Manchild” is now one of the most decorated tracks of the 2026 Grammy Awards season, earning nominations for Best Music Video, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance.

It marks her first-ever nod in the video category, a milestone she doesn’t take lightly. “I really like that because I think—I make pop music and sometimes you don't expect to see those visuals in a song like that,” she explained. “So that one means a lot to me.”

In June, Carpenter shared a rare glimpse into the heart behind the hit, revealing that “Manchild” emerged unexpectedly during what she called “the best random Tuesday” of her life.

“This song became something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life,” she wrote. “It sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and feels like a never-ending road trip in the summer.”

Cactus bruises aside, Carpenter seems unfazed. Pop may be her playground, but with “Manchild,” she’s proving once again that ambition, and a little chaos, look good on her.
