Luisita crushes field; Mamala Bay stuns

BAGUIO CITY — Luisita Golf and Country Club left no doubt about its supremacy, cruising to a commanding 39-point victory to retain the Fil Championship Seniors crown at Baguio Country Club. Over at Camp John Hay, Mamala Bay delivered the day’s biggest drama, unleashing a massive final-round rally to snatch the Am Championship Seniors title in the 75th Januarius Fil-Am Invitational.

Luisita slammed the door on its rivals with a flight-best 99 points, punctuating a 454 total. Abe Rosal and Benjie Sumulong set the tone with matching 29s, while Jeric Hechanova added 21 and Ferdie Barbosa chipped in 20. 

Rosal also pocketed his second individual title, finishing with 127 points on rounds of 39, 32 and 27 — the division’s lone under-par performance.

Srixon IMG Team 1 made a late dash to claim second, firing 95 behind Junjun Plana (27), Joseph Tambunting (25), Thirdy Escaño (23) and Francis Telan (20). Their 415 total nudged out Riviera Golf, which settled for third with 411 after an 87.

In the Am Championship Seniors, Mamala Bay pulled off a comeback worthy of the spotlight. Down 21 points after Day 1, the squad erupted for a tournament-best 118 to finish at 404. Chris Howard led the surge with 33 points, followed by Bill Conners’ 31, Dale Jurgenson’s 29 and Vince Sturbaum’s 25. Three-day leader Green Water couldn’t keep pace and closed with 108 for 396, good for second. Summit Point rounded out the podium with 386.

A standout moment came courtesy of Bibak Northeast iGolfers USA’s Rocky Aquino, who scored a hole-in-one on BCC’s par-3 No. 15 — the ace putting him in line for a Toyota Raize.
