Urban congestion, informal settlements and decades of inconsistent urban and rural planning have contributed to cramped cities and limited access to green, open spaces.

SM Prime has laid out a comprehensive sustainability strategy that focuses on greener and more resilient developments. As part of this effort, the company has started redeveloping several major malls — among them SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia and SM City Cebu — to incorporate lush indoor gardens, pocket parks and wider outdoor greenery. These additions aim to soften the urban landscape and provide visitors with cooler, more relaxing environments.

Beyond greenery, SM Prime has also invested in water-recycling facilities, solar energy systems and improved deck landscaping. These measures reduce energy consumption, limit water waste and lower the overall environmental impact of its properties.
Through these efforts, businesses strive to demonstrate how commercial spaces can contribute to sustainable living — creating economic developments at the same time creating healthier, more livable communities.
