From his early work in films like The Outsiders, Risky Business, and Top Gun, one thing was certain: Tom Cruise was destined to be a movie star. With a solid body of work spanning more than 40 years, his movies consistently performed well at the box office, running the gamut from heavy dramas to romance films to big-budget action movies. In recent years, the name Tom Cruise has also become synonymous with the massively successful Mission: Impossible action franchise. Now, he is reaping the rewards of that hard work and lifelong dedication to film.
At the Governors Awards on 16 November 2025, Cruise’s contribution to the world of cinema was recognized by both the industry and his peers with an Academy Honorary Award. The award was presented by Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu—Cruise’s first Oscar, after having been nominated four times previously. The two are currently working on a film together, slated for release in 2026.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Cruise reflected on how film has shaped his life and deepened his understanding of the world around him. “It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
