QC launches ‘Green Building’ code
Published on

The local government of Quezon City launched its ambitious Quezon City Green Building Code of 2025 on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the city’s commitment to sustainable construction and renewable energy solutions.

Mayor Joy Belmonte led the event, which was also attended by UK Deputy Head of Mission Mike Welch and C40’s Regional Director for East Southeast Asia and Oceania, Murali Ram.

The new code aims to strengthen the city’s 2009 Green Building Ordinance and align local policies with the city’s Enhanced Local Climate Change Action Plan 2021-2050 and the Philippine Green Building Code.

It is supported by the C40 Cities’ Urban Climate Action Programme and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

With a population of 3.2 million, Quezon City faces a pressing challenge, as energy use in buildings accounts for 60 percent of its total greenhouse gas emissions, which total 7,087,064 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The new code is a crucial strategy to modernize policy, expand solar deployment, and promote sustainable construction across all sectors.
