QC intensifies campaign against rise in flu-like illnesses

The Quezon City local government is intensifying its campaign against Flu-Like Illnesses (FLI) amid a notable rise in reported cases.

At the Quezon City Journalists’ Forum, Jovit Junio, Disease Surveillance Officer of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division of the City Health Department, said that as of 7 November, the city has recorded 2,606 FLI cases — an 87 percent increase from last year’s 1,394 cases during the same period.

Of the total, school children aged 14 and below accounted for the highest number, with 1,637 cases reported.

Junio said the city has strengthened its surveillance and awareness efforts by mobilizing barangay health centers to prevent further spread. He noted that Barangay Batasan and Commonwealth are among the areas of concern, where some of the largest public schools in the city are located.

“We have experienced precautionary measures during the pandemic like wearing face masks. We should do the same if you are inflicted with cough and flu,” Junio suggested.

Dr. Nestor Dumagas, focal person for Communicable Disease of the Department of Education in the city, said they observed an increase in FLI cases from August to October, as students often stay in crowded and enclosed spaces during the rainy season.

He reminded the public that FLI is contagious as it can spread through saliva droplets. Dumagas advised individuals experiencing fever of 38°C or higher, along with cough and sore throat, to consult a doctor and get adequate rest.

Though face masks are not mandatory, both officials encouraged those showing symptoms to wear them to avoid transmission. They also recommended handwashing and annual flu and pneumonia vaccinations as preventive measures.
