President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at Malacañang Palace on Tuesday, where the two leaders discussed climate resilience and sustainability efforts.
Ban is in the country for a speaking engagement at the Trans-Pacific Sustainability Dialogue (TPSD) in Makati City.
The dialogue, a joint initiative of Stanford University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center and the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, brings together global leaders to accelerate progress on the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
During the courtesy call, Ban conveyed hope that the Philippines will recover quickly from the effects of recent back-to-back typhoons and pledged continued international support for the country as a climate-vulnerable nation.
Marcos expressed appreciation for Ban’s continued advocacy on climate resilience.
“I am glad that you continue this very important work,” Marcos said. “What you are doing — sustainability — is key to the survival of my country, considering we are so vulnerable to the effects of climate change.”
The two men previously met in February 2024, when Marcos welcomed the support of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), where Ban serves as president and chairperson of the Council.
Also, Ban reaffirmed the GGGI’s commitment to assist the Marcos administration in implementing sustainable and climate-resilient development programs.
Among those joining Ban were Republic of Korea Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa and former Korean diplomats. President Marcos was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Secretary Tess Lazaro and Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.
