President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday emphasized the central role of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in driving global trade and economic growth as he departed for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit in South Korea.

“We must recognize the gravity of the APEC region,” Marcos said in his departure statement at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

He noted that the APEC bloc accounts for 46 percent of global trade and 61 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP), describing it as a critical engine of the world economy.

The President said these figures highlight APEC’s significance in shaping global markets and economic trends, adding that the region’s collective performance has direct implications for both developed and emerging economies, including the Philippines.

“Strengthening cooperation within the APEC community means ensuring that our country remains integrated in the global economy and continues to benefit from expanding trade and investment opportunities,” he said.

Marcos stressed that the summit provides a platform for leaders to address key challenges affecting economic stability and growth, such as geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and the effects of climate change on trade and production.

He also said that as trade patterns evolve, APEC must lead in promoting innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable development to maintain its global competitiveness.

The President added that the Philippines’ participation aims to secure stronger economic partnerships and attract investments that align with national development priorities, particularly in areas like renewable energy, manufacturing, and technology.

Marcos is expected to hold bilateral meetings with fellow APEC leaders to discuss ways to enhance trade flows and ensure that economic gains within the region remain inclusive and resilient.

The APEC forum, composed of 21 member economies, represents nearly half of global trade activity and over three-fifths of global GDP. It serves as a key venue for policy coordination and collaboration to promote open markets, economic integration, and sustainable growth across the Asia-Pacific region.

Marcos said the Philippines’ continued active engagement in APEC reflects its commitment to being a “reliable and forward-looking partner” in advancing shared prosperity and ensuring that economic progress benefits all Filipinos.
