President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday lauded the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for its steadfast service to the nation and pledged continued government support for its modernization and welfare programs.
In his speech on the PCG’s 124th founding anniversary at its headquarters in Manila, Marcos praised the Coast Guard’s courage and commitment to duty, citing their vital role in rescue operations, maritime safety, and national security, especially amid increasing challenges in the West Philippine Sea.
“In these times when our seas face greater challenges, you remain steadfast, proving that courage knows no tides and that service knows no bounds,” Marcos said.
“You stand as guardians of safety and stability. And in return, I assure you that this government is solidly behind you,” he added.
The President likewise commended the PCG’s accomplishments over the past year, including the evacuation of more than one million people during natural disasters, the safe passage of nearly 10 million passengers, and the confiscation of around P2 billion worth of illegal drugs and smuggled goods.
He also recognized the PCG’s quick response following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu, where Coast Guard personnel delivered over 30,000 food packs and medical kits and provided more than 100 medical interventions within the first 72 hours.
“This is the PCG that works quietly and effectively,” Marcos said. “In these times when our seas face greater challenges, you remain steadfast, proving that courage knows no tides and that service knows no bounds. You stand as guardians of safety and of stability.”
Marcos likewise reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Coast Guard’s capabilities through continued investment in new vessels, aircraft, command posts, and communication systems, as well as improved training, logistics, and facilities.
He also cited several ongoing infrastructure projects designed to support PCG personnel, including the PCG General Hospital, the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center in Misibis, and the First Responder and Nursing Service Facility.
“We will keep investing in new vessels, in aircraft, command posts, [and] communication systems. We will improve training, facilities, and logistics to provide every PCG personnel a sense of dignity in fulfilling their roles,” Marcos assured.
He then highlighted the PCG’s crucial role in protecting Filipino fisherfolk and asserting the country’s rights in the West Philippine Sea, saying their presence at sea symbolizes hope and national unity.
“Each time you sail, you remind the world that the Philippines will always protect what is ours,” he said.
The President also called on the Coast Guard to uphold transparency and integrity, saying these values are essential in rebuilding public trust in government.
“Our people’s trust in government has been shaken, but trust can be regained if we remain transparent and true to our mission,” he said.
“Whenever our people see you during rescue missions or in your day-to-day patrols, what they see is that the government is still working diligently and is worthy of their trust,” he further stressed.
During the event, Marcos also lauded the 2025 PCG awardees for their dedication and excellence, encouraging them to continue inspiring their peers.
“To all the guardians of our seas, continue to serve with honor and excellence for our fellow Filipinos,” he said.
