Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon on Wednesday warned that authorities will go after syndicates that hoard beep cards and resell them for up to P300 each.
"Meron mga sindikato na namimili sa mga istasyon and we have already identified which stations. Babantayan namin 'yang istasyon na 'yun," Dizon said in an interview at the LRT-2 Antipolo Station in Masinag, Antipolo City.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), according to him, is already coordinating with the Philippine National Police and the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation to arrest those syndicates.
Dizon said that his agency will also coordinate with the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group to crack down on online selling platforms found selling beep cards at marked-up prices.
"We will order them to close down these sites that sell beep cards," he said.
"I am also Lazada and other online selling sites, if you don't take down of these sites, you will be part of the cases that we will be filing against these people. Idadamay namin kayo dito, pati kayo kakasuhan namin," the DOTr chief added.
Meanwhile, Dizon announced that some 300,000 additional beep cards will be available starting next week.
He said the move is in line with the directives of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to address the shortage of beep cards that has caused long queues and inconvenience to passengers.
"By next week beep card will be completing the delivery of 300,000 additional beep cards across LRT1, LRT2, and MRT 3. So by next week wala na tayong shortage ng beep cards," Dizon said.
Dizon also announced that personalized student beep cards granting automatic 50 percent fare discounts in all rail lines in Metro Manila will be available starting next month.
So dalawang linggo nalang iro-rollout na natin ito yung beep cards for the students," Dizon said.
"So ngayon ipapakita nalang 'yung ID nila, nire-record nalang ng teller yung ID ng mga estudyante and hindi na kailangan mag-fill up ng form," the DOTr chief added.
Dizon likewise said that senior citizens and persons with disability also no longer need to queue or fill out forms to avail of the 50 percent fare discount.
"Starting yesterday, senior citizens, PWDs, and students in all the lines–LRT 1, LRT 2, and MRT 3–wala ng kailangan fill-upan. Ipapakita lang 'yung kanilang ID," he said.
Dizon also said that the personalized student beep cards are "one-time" but can be renewed after every school year.
"Ibig sabihin after one year hindi na gagana ito, kailangan mo bumalik at ipakita ang iyong valid student ID for next year para makakuha ka ulit ng panibagong student beep card," he explained.
